Starting to build up the painting
You could call me a dribbling idiot...

Now I start squeezing paint onto the canvas. I use plastic bottles with metal tips. I prop the canvas up on the backs of four chairs and squeeze away. I am aiming for two things, texture and broken colour – although the blue areas are going to be predominantly blue, I want other colours showing through. I take one of my sketches at a time and copy them onto the painting. One slight change I’ve made with this painting is ensuring that where there is a gap in the colouring on the sketch I fill in with something that is nearly but not quite the underlying colour – mostly to ensure that there are not areas with less texture in the final painting. Because the canvas is horizontal it’s less easy to take regular photos – this shows three days progress.
