I then block in the painting. I need to do this because while I am building up the painting the white priming would overwhelm it and particularly because I find it easier to achieve satisfactory dark areas if I use underpainting. I used to spray the paint at this stage, but I now find it easier to use a brush. My idea for the painting is for the frontal figure to be quite dark and the profile figure to be light.
