Making the drawing
Okay, time for some structure...

I then superimpose the drawing on a photo of the canvas. I can now use the marks I’ve made as reference points so I can copy the drawing onto the canvas. (The traditional method of “squaring up” was to draw a grid on the drawing and on the canvas and then copy square by square – I’m simply using modern technology to carry out a similar operation). I initially copy the drawing in charcoal, then go over the lines with paint.
