Drawing with string?

Do not try this at home - unless you want to drive yourself mad...

The next stage is to glue pieces of string along the lines of the drawing. Why do I do this? Firstly to increase the amount of texture in the painting and secondly because I want to emphasise the tension between the painting as an object and the painting as representation. I would add that every time I do it, I think that drawing with string is not the best idea I’ve ever had. The secret of not driving oneself completely bananas is to wet the string (which makes it easier to shape to the lines) and to wear examination gloves (which stops the string sticking to my fingers rather than the canvas. Once I have glued the string down, I squeeze a string of paint over it to further secure it.
